IA Staff Helps Restore Mattie Freeland House

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

President and CEO Dr. Eloisa Klementich, along with four other members of the Invest Atlanta team, volunteered their time to help renovate the former home of English Avenue matriarch Mattie Freeland. The team spent time on Saturday, February 25 painting the exterior of the building, which is being converted into a community center operated by New Life Covenant Church (NLCC).

Once complete, the building will serve as a welcoming neighborhood community center in honor of Ms. Freeland, who sheltered and took care of many in her English Avenue home until her death in 2008. She also loved to give candy to children and send bread to her neighbors.  Her legacy will continue through the educational programs, meetings, and events that will be held at the Mattie Freeland House.

In addition to Invest Atlanta, the NLCC has also enlisted the help of the English Avenue community, Home Depot, and the Arthur M. Blank Foundation to reconstruct Ms. Freeland’s former home. Skilled workers from the nearby Mercedes-Benz Stadium construction site kicked off the project, with the rest to be completed through a collaborative volunteer effort spanning several weeks.
